Registering as an Employer with HMRC
Published on December 16, 2020

You must register with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) when you start employing staff; this must be done before the first payday.
It can take up to 2 weeks for HMRC to approve and activate your PAYE account due as you will be sent important reference codes by post which can cause delays; we suggest to start the registration process well in advance.
You can register online for PAYE with HMRC through the Government Gateway, see the process below.
Registration Process
- Register as an employer using the online form – https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/eligibility-for-paye/one-director-national-insurance
- You will receive a letter containing two reference numbers; your PAYE reference and your Accounts Office reference – arrives within 5 working days
- You will receive a separate letter containing the activation code for PAYE Online allowing you to activate and access your PAYE account. You must use this code within 30 days before it expires – arrives within 10 working days
